Easton Monday 5 - 3 Bathelona
[20 Sep : AXA]
Beautiful, warm, sunny weather recalled the title decider between these two (arch rival) teams from a couple of years ago but whereas that match was a close fought affair, Monday had this one sewn up by half time. How else to explain the second-half display which saw Easton blow numerous opportunities and ship three goals other than to say they took their “foot off the accelerator"?
[comments]Bathelona's woeful attempts to play an offside trap against the pace of Ben Adams, Morgan Cummins and The Colonel, with Felix, Rob the debutant and Stu Charlton threading well-timed passes, proved expensive.
Morgan followed up Colonel's shot to slot home the opener and then Brian mishit a corner into goal. Then Adams’ cut back was drilled home by Felix before a strange twanging noise signalled the snapping of Sicknote's gossamer-thin hamstring and Yarrow's introduction. The player/coach scored with his first touch - giving the keeper "the eyes" (presumably a look of terror mixed with embarrassment) as he scuffed in. Felix completed the first half rout without asking why no-one was talking to him.
5-0 up at the break Monday could be forgiven for taking the second half easy – which was precisely what they did. Bathelona came back strongly with three goals whilst the Monday machine coughed and spluttered only sporadically into life. Good chances were wasted due to the inability to muster the energy to kick the ball in the right direction while Bath's teenage keeper (he looked it anyway) improved immeasurably and Rob got shouted ('MAN ON!) at a lot.
The final whistle was greeted with relief from a tired Easton side - one imagines they'll need to increase their reserves of stamina if they are to mount a serious title challenge, but with key players to return it was (despite the naff second half) a great start to the season.
